Shopify SEO Agency: SEO for Shopify Stores That Want More Organic Sales
By the PNext team · Updated 20 October 2026
Shopify handles a lot of SEO basics well, which is why many store owners assume there is nothing left to do. But the platform also creates some predictable problems: duplicate product URLs through collections, thin tag pages, slow themes loaded with apps, and limited control over URL structure. Fixing those, and building collection pages that deserve to rank, is where most of the gains are.
This page explains what our Shopify SEO covers, the platform-specific issues we fix, and how we measure results in organic revenue. For the wider principles that apply to any store, see our ecommerce SEO services.

What does a Shopify SEO agency do?
A Shopify SEO agency improves how a Shopify store ranks in Google. It fixes platform issues like duplicate product URLs, tag pages and app bloat, optimises collection and product pages, improves theme speed and product structured data, edits robots.txt.liquid where needed and builds content and links, measured by organic revenue.
Common Shopify SEO issues we fix
| Issue | Why it matters | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Products reachable through collection URLs | Splits signals across several URLs for one product | Link to the main /products/ URL from collections; check canonicals |
| Tag pages indexed | Thin, near-duplicate pages compete with collections | Noindex or remove tag links that do not match real searches |
| Fixed URL prefixes | /products/, /collections/ and /pages/ cannot be changed | Focus on handles, titles and internal links instead |
| App bloat | Each app can add scripts that slow every page | Audit apps, remove unused code, defer what remains |
| Weak collection pages | A grid with no text rarely ranks for category searches | Useful intro copy, FAQs and links to sub-collections |
Collection page SEO
Collections are Shopify’s category pages, and they are usually where organic revenue comes from. We give each priority collection one clear target search, a short introduction that helps shoppers choose, sub-collections for real search variations (for example “waterproof hiking boots” under “hiking boots”), and internal links from the navigation and buying guides.
Duplicate product URLs and robots.txt.liquid
By default, many Shopify themes link to products through the collection path (/collections/boots/products/trail-runner) rather than the main product URL. Shopify adds a canonical tag pointing to the main URL, but internal links still split signals. The usual fix is a small theme change so collection grids link directly to /products/.
Since 2021 Shopify lets stores edit robots.txt.liquid to control crawling. We use it carefully, for example to keep internal search and some filter URLs out of the crawl, and only after the internal linking is fixed, because blocking a URL also stops Google seeing its canonical tag.
Apps, themes and speed
- Audit every installed app and remove the ones no longer used, including leftover code in the theme.
- Defer non-essential scripts such as reviews widgets and chat until after the page loads.
- Compress and correctly size images, and lazy-load below-the-fold media.
- Test on mobile, where most Shopify traffic comes from.
Product schema and Merchant Center
Most Shopify themes include basic product structured data, but often miss reviews, shipping and return details or produce errors after customisation. We validate and complete it, and connect a clean product feed to Google Merchant Center so products can appear in free listings and Shopping ads.
