SEO Checklist: 40 Steps to Rank in 2026

By the PNext team · Updated 19 October 2026

Most SEO checklists are either too short to be useful or so long nobody finishes them. This one has 40 steps, grouped the way we work through a site, and each comes with a single line on how to do it.

Work through it in order the first time. After that, the technical and content sections are worth repeating every quarter.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
  • ✓Setup and tracking
  • ✓Keyword research
  • ✓On-page SEO
  • ✓Technical SEO
  • ✓Content, links and AI search
The short answer

What should an SEO checklist include?

A complete SEO checklist covers tracking setup, keyword research, on-page basics like titles and headings, technical health such as indexing and speed, content quality, links from other sites, and now AI search visibility. The 40 steps below cover each area with a short how-to.

Steps 1 to 6

Setup and tracking

Download: all 40 steps as a spreadsheet (CSV, opens in Excel or Google Sheets), with a status column to tick off each step.

01

Verify Google Search Console

Use a domain property so every subdomain and protocol is covered.

02

Verify Bing Webmaster Tools

You can import from Search Console in a few clicks. Bing also feeds Copilot.

03

Install GA4 with conversions

Mark form submissions, calls and chat clicks as key events, not just page views.

04

Submit an XML sitemap

Include only pages you want indexed: no redirects, no noindex pages.

05

Check robots.txt

Make sure you are not blocking important sections or search and AI crawlers you want.

06

Record a baseline

Save current clicks, impressions, rankings and leads so you can measure progress.

Steps 7 to 12

Keyword research

07

List your services and products

Every one needs at least one page, so start from what you sell.

08

Find the searches for each

Use Search Console, Google Keyword Planner or a paid tool to collect real queries.

09

Label search intent

Learn, compare or buy. Look at what already ranks to decide.

10

Group keywords by intent

Searches that bring up the same results belong on one page.

11

Map each group to one page

One page per group avoids pages competing with each other.

12

Check difficulty honestly

Start with groups your site can realistically win, then work up.

Steps 13 to 20

On-page SEO

13

Write a unique title tag

Main keyword near the start, under about 60 characters, written for a click.

14

Write a meta description

Around 120 to 160 characters that sell the click; Google may rewrite it, but often uses it.

15

Use one H1

It should say what the page is about. Check the HTML, as themes sometimes add a hidden second one.

16

Structure with H2s and H3s

Headings should read like a table of contents.

17

Answer the main question early

A short, direct answer near the top helps people and AI engines.

18

Use descriptive URLs

Short, lowercase and readable, without dates or IDs where possible.

19

Add image alt text

Describe what the image shows; it helps accessibility and image search.

20

Add internal links

Link related pages with anchor text that says what the target page is about.

Steps 21 to 28

Technical SEO

21

Check indexing

Search Console’s Pages report shows what is indexed and why other pages are not.

22

Fix crawl errors

Broken links and 404s on important URLs should be fixed or redirected.

23

Use one version of each URL

Pick https and www or non-www, and redirect the rest.

24

Set canonical tags

Each page should point to itself unless it is a deliberate duplicate.

25

Pass Core Web Vitals

Aim for good loading, responsiveness and visual stability on mobile.

26

Make the site mobile-friendly

Test the pages people actually land on, on a real phone.

27

Add structured data

Organization, Service or Product, FAQ and Breadcrumb where they genuinely apply.

28

Remove redirect chains

Every redirect should go straight to the final URL.

Steps 29 to 36

Content and links

29

Improve thin pages

Pages with a few lines of text rarely rank. Add what the searcher needs.

30

Show real experience

Examples, data and photos from your own work. Google’s guidance on helpful content stresses first-hand experience.

31

Add author and update details

Who wrote it, when it was updated and how to contact you.

32

Refresh old content

Update facts, dates and examples on pages that used to perform.

33

Merge duplicate pages

Combine near-identical posts into one and redirect the others.

34

Claim your Google Business Profile

Essential if you serve customers locally.

35

Earn relevant links

Partners, directories, industry lists, PR and guest articles. Avoid bought link packages.

36

Check your backlink profile

Know who links to you and fix links pointing at broken pages.

Steps 37 to 40

AI search

37

Allow AI search crawlers

Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and others you want to be found by.

38

Keep your brand facts consistent

Same name, services and location everywhere AI engines might read about you.

39

Write quotable answers

Short, specific, evidence-backed passages are what AI answers lift.

40

Track AI visibility

Run a fixed set of buyer prompts monthly and follow AI referral visits in GA4.
