What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? A Plain-English Guide

By the PNext team · Updated 19 October 2026

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: the work of getting your business mentioned and cited in answers written by AI, in tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

The term comes from a 2023 research paper by a team at Princeton and collaborators, later presented at the KDD 2024 conference. Since then it has become shorthand for a whole set of practices. Some are genuinely new; many are good SEO with a different emphasis.

This guide explains what GEO is, what the research actually found, how it differs from SEO, and the tactics we use for clients and our own site.

The short answer

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your content and brand more likely to be mentioned or cited in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. It focuses on clear, quotable answers, evidence such as statistics and sources, and a strong presence on the sites those engines trust.

Where it comes from

What the original GEO research found

The paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization by Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari and colleagues tested how different changes to a web page affected its visibility in AI-generated answers. They built a benchmark of queries, rewrote source pages in different ways and measured how often each version was used.

Their abstract reports that GEO methods can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses, and up to 37% on Perplexity, which they tested as a real-world engine. Summaries of the paper consistently point to the same winners: adding citations to credible sources, adding quotations, and adding statistics. Keyword stuffing, the old SEO habit, did not help.

Two caveats matter. The results varied by topic, and the engines have changed a lot since the experiments. Treat the paper as evidence of direction, not a guaranteed uplift.

How GEO differs from SEO

SEOGEO
GoalRank a page in search resultsBe mentioned or cited in an AI answer
Where it showsA list of linksA written answer with a few sources
What winsRelevance, links, technical healthClear answers, evidence, trusted mentions
Main metricRankings, clicksMentions, citations, AI referral visits

In practice they overlap heavily. AI engines that search the web, like ChatGPT search and Perplexity, still need to find and read your pages, so technical SEO still matters. We compare the terms in more detail in SEO vs AIO vs GEO, and AIO, the broader umbrella term, in what is AIO.

Behind the answer

How AI engines pick their sources

When an AI tool answers with live web results, it typically runs one or more searches behind the scenes, reads a handful of pages and writes an answer from them, citing some as sources. That gives you three chances to be included:

  • Be found: rank well enough in the underlying search, and do not block AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot in robots.txt.
  • Be useful: have the clearest, most specific answer to the question on the page the engine reads.
  • Be corroborated: appear on other sites the engine trusts, such as reviews, directories, industry lists and news, so your name comes up repeatedly.

Answers built only from the model’s training data work differently. There, the only lever is how widely and consistently your brand has been described across the web over time.

What to do

Eight GEO tactics that work

01

Answer first

Put a direct, 40 to 60 word answer under each main heading, then the detail. Engines quote short, self-contained passages.

02

Add statistics with sources

The research found this one of the most effective changes. Use real numbers and link to where they come from.

03

Quote experts

A named expert with a clear view gives the engine something specific to quote.

04

Cite credible sources

Link to the research, standards and official guidance you rely on.

05

Write for real questions

Use the phrasing buyers use with AI tools: full questions, comparisons and “best X for Y”.

06

Make your entity clear

Consistent company name, services, location and facts across your site, schema markup, Google Business Profile and directories.

07

Earn third-party mentions

Reviews, directory listings, guest articles and lists in your industry. Engines trust what others say about you more than what you say yourself.

08

Keep it fresh

Update key pages with a visible date. AI search often prefers recent sources for fast-moving topics.

This article tries to follow its own advice: a short answer at the top, a linked primary source, a comparison table and real questions in the FAQ.

How to measure GEO

Track a fixed set of prompts monthly across the engines your buyers use, record mentions and citations, and follow AI referral traffic in GA4 through to leads. Our guides to measuring AIO results and the best LLM SEO tools cover the detail.

If you want help putting this into practice, our generative engine optimization services start with an AI visibility audit and a prompt set built around your buyers. We are a GEO agency that measures results by mentions, citations and leads, not activity.

Generative engine optimization: improving how often AI tools mention or cite your brand in the answers they generate. In other contexts GEO can mean geographic targeting, so check which one people mean.

No. AI engines that search the web still rely on finding good pages, so SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds a focus on quotable answers, evidence and third-party mentions.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) usually refers to optimising for direct answers such as featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO is specifically about generative AI answers. The tactics overlap a lot.

Engines that search the web can pick up improved pages within weeks. Changing how a model describes your brand from its training data takes much longer and depends on mentions across the web.

Yes. Start with clear answers on your key pages, accurate business information everywhere, and a monthly prompt check. An agency helps most with scale, measurement and earning mentions.

The term was introduced in a 2023 paper by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues, published at KDD 2024. The ideas built on years of SEO practice around featured snippets and entities.
