What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A Practical Guide
By the PNext team · Updated 19 October 2026
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of making your content the answer: the snippet Google quotes, the summary an AI Overview builds, the response a voice assistant reads out, or the recommendation ChatGPT gives.
The term has been around since the days of featured snippets and voice search, and it has come back into use as AI answers have taken over the top of the results page. This guide explains what it means now, how it relates to SEO and GEO, and the tactics that actually move the needle.

What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so search engines and AI assistants can use it as a direct answer, in featured snippets, Google AI Overviews, voice results and tools like ChatGPT. It focuses on clear question-and-answer content, structured data and trusted, accurate information.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aim | Rank pages in search results | Be the direct answer | Be cited in AI-generated answers |
| Where | The list of links | Snippets, AI Overviews, voice, assistants | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews |
| Main lever | Relevance, links, technical health | Question-led, structured answers | Evidence, citations and third-party mentions |
| Main metric | Rankings and clicks | Answer appearances | Mentions and citations |
In practice the three overlap. AEO is the bridge: it takes good SEO pages and makes them easy to quote. GEO extends the same idea to AI tools that write their own answers. We go deeper on the AI side in what generative engine optimization is and SEO vs AIO vs GEO.
Eight AEO tactics that work
Start from real questions
Use People Also Ask, Search Console queries, sales calls and support emails. Write down the exact wording customers use.
Answer in 40 to 60 words
Put the direct answer straight under a heading that matches the question, then add detail.
Match the answer format
Definitions as a sentence, processes as numbered steps, comparisons as tables, prices as ranges.
Add FAQ sections
A focused FAQ on each service page covers the follow-up questions engines like to answer.
Use structured data
FAQPage, HowTo where relevant, Organization and Service schema help engines understand the page.
Be specific and accurate
Named sources, real numbers and dates make your answer safer for an engine to use.
Keep entity details consistent
Your business name, services and location should match across your site and the web.
Refresh answers
Update facts and prices regularly; stale answers are dropped.
AEO examples
A typical service page starts with a slogan and a paragraph about the company. An answer engine has nothing to quote. The AEO version puts the answer first:
Before
“We are a passionate team delivering cutting-edge solutions for your growth.” Nothing here answers a question.
After
“Technical SEO is the work of making sure search engines can crawl, render and index your website. It covers site speed, indexing, structured data, redirects and internal links.” That is a quotable answer.
Format match
A question like “how much does SEO cost” gets a short answer with a price range and the factors behind it, ideally in a table.
You can see the same pattern on this page: a short answer at the top, a comparison table and a question-led FAQ.
A page outline you can copy. This is the skeleton we use when we rewrite a service or guide page for AEO. Swap in your own topic:
| Part of the page | What goes in it | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| H1 | The main question or service, in the words buyers use | Matches the query an engine is trying to answer |
| Short answer | 40 to 60 words directly under the H1 or first heading | The passage most likely to be quoted or summarised |
| Key facts | Price range, timeline, who it is for, in a list or table | Answers the follow-up questions in one place |
| How it works | Numbered steps | Easy to lift as a process answer |
| Comparison | A table against the main alternative | “X vs Y” questions are common in AI answers |
| Proof | A real example, named source or dated data | Makes the answer safer for an engine to trust |
| FAQ | 5 to 8 real questions with short answers, marked up with FAQPage | Covers long-tail and voice questions |
| About and date | Who wrote it, when it was last updated, how to contact you | Signals experience and freshness |
Common AEO mistakes
Burying the answer
Three paragraphs of introduction before the answer. Engines, and readers, give up before they reach it.
One FAQ for the whole site
A single long FAQ page competes with your service pages. Put the right questions on the page they belong to.
Answers that are too vague
“It depends” without saying on what. Give the range, the factors and an example.
Schema that does not match the page
FAQ markup for questions that are not visible on the page breaks Google’s guidelines and can be ignored.
Writing for robots
Stuffing the question phrase into every sentence. Answer engines prefer natural, specific language.
Never updating
Old prices and dates make an answer unsafe to quote, so engines move on to fresher sources.
Voice assistants follow the same pattern. They read a single short answer, so the 40 to 60 word answer under each heading does double duty for spoken results.

Answer engine optimization: structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can use it as a direct answer.
AEO builds on SEO. SEO gets a page ranked; AEO makes that page easy to quote as an answer in snippets, AI Overviews and assistants.
AEO is about being the direct answer, including snippets and voice. GEO is specifically about being cited in AI-generated answers. The tactics overlap a lot.
More than before. AI Overviews draw on clear, well-structured answers from ranking pages, which is exactly what AEO produces.
FAQPage, HowTo where it applies, Organization, LocalBusiness and Service schema all help engines understand and trust your content.
Changes to existing ranking pages can show in snippets and AI Overviews within weeks. New pages take longer, since they need to rank first.
